A Welcome from “Dot Cotton”
For
some years now, those of you who watch East Enders will associate me with
my character Dot Cotton; what you may not know is that for the last 20 years
I have been the President and Patron of this wonderful charity, the aims of
which are very close to my heart.
As a grandmother of five children, I have always valued my family and it
wasn’t until I met John and Annie Stirling that it brought home to me
how difficult life can be for some families. Freshfields brought me face to
face with both the problems attached to children with special needs and the
agonising cruelty suffered by some donkeys. How these two things came together
is a wonder to me but, through the dedication of this work we have all been
able to build Freshfields - the most original and unique charity that exists
today. From the many letters that I get, I know some of you have seen me on
television with the donkeys and the special needs children who come to stay
here. On my frequent weekends here I do so enjoy the company of both and,
to welcome back parents who have had some much needed respite while their
children were in our care, has given me both strength and awareness of what
Freshfields means to so many.
When I first arrived, I didn’t know much about donkeys. I never thought that I would ever get so attached to an animal as I have with these friendly and forgiving creatures. I have made many life-long friends among this herd.
This
charity cannot run on how we feel and it takes a great deal of resources to
do this much needed and appreciated work. I like to think I have, over the
years, made a substantial contribution and will go on doing so for as long
as I can. However, I am asking you to assist me in carrying out this work
by donating what you can. All your contributions will be very gratefully received
and believe me when I say we will make sure all your donations go straight
to where they are needed most.
This is a lifeline for our children and our donkeys and I am asking you personally to be as generous as you possibly can in keeping this place going for all to enjoy. Thank you.
